PRACTICUM REVIEW
1. What did you do for your practicum? Please include a detailed description
For my practicum I did plcy388d. This class is about innovation and social change and has to do with the do good institute. I participated in weekly discussions about various topics related to leadership and qualities of leaders. In addition, we discussed social issues from various lenses. In the end we were tasked with finding a social issue in the world and developing a possible solution through a series of essays.
2. What did you learn from your practicum?
I learned how important it is to think about other people and other issues going on in the world. There is so much that needs to change and real leaders see that and create change. Throughout the course we looked at various social issues from different lenses which taught me to be a good listener and understand other people's points of view regarding a topic.
3. How have you grown as a leader, student, and professional? Upload at least 1 artifact as evidence of your growth and discuss WHY you chose it. Describing WHY you uploaded something is more important than the item itself. Examples of evidence could include: -A class assignment -A photo of an experience -A project for an internship -A weekly journal/journal entry
I uploaded a file of a reflection I did for this class as it shows the growth I've had reflecting on the communities I have been a part of. I was able to analyze the communities I was part of as a child and discuss the tensions I felt being a part of them. Being able to reflect on an experience and learn from the good and bad allowed me to grow as a person. Overall, weekly reflections such as this allowed me to be introspective and go back to another time to discuss what I was feeling in that moment.
4. How can you apply your practicum experience to your life/career moving forward?
I can use what I've learned to navigate difficult situations in the workplace. In addition, I can provide support for my colleagues and help make the work environment better using my skills. Another idea I practiced in this practicum is empathy. While discussing various difficult social issues I learned to see things from a different point of view. I can use empathy in the workplace to help understand my colleagues better.
5. What are your plans for: a. The rest of your time at UMD? b. Post-graduation and your prospective career/field of interest?
My plans for the rest of my time at UMD is to get my computer science degree. In addition, I hope to pursue a business minor as well so I can use both in my computer science career. With regards to my computer science career, I'm hoping to ideally be a project manager which is the perfect balance of business and computer science for me. However, I will start out as a computer scientist before I transition roles.
6. How will you incorporate what you learned in PL (this could include your practicum) into your job search? Upload: a. Updated resume b. An elevator pitch about what you learned in PL and why its relevant for a job/position you’re interested in (this could be in cover letter format)
After taking part in PL and practicum I know that I want to work in an environment that is nurturing and supportive of my goals. Throughout my job search I will look into companies that are helping others in a sincere way and make sure that I can express myself as a part of the company. While I will be working in the corporate world I do still think there are ways to make a difference on an individual basis.
Elevator pitch:
Being a product manager requires a depth of knowledge in both the technological and business world. The computer science and business skills I gain along with the soft skills I have gained from pl can help me be understand every aspect of product development. I will be able to understand the technical programming as well as communicate and manage people well. Specifically, the ability to be observant and aware of the people I am working with will help me in the job. In addition, the ability to be step up and take control when there is chaos is extremely important for this job and I will be able to step up to the demands of the role with my pl skills.
